Nuts
written by Tom Topor
directed by John Whittaker
A young woman is forced by circumstances, i.e. the need to make a living, into prostitution and causes the death of one of her clients. She is sent to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric assessment. The play concerns a 'special proceeding' of the New York Supreme Court held in Bellevue to determine whether the accused is sane enough to go to trial in a civil court for first-degree manslaughter, or whether she would be more or less permanently committed as - well - nuts.
