All the characters in this play are trying desperately to get onto the 'learning ladder' and all have different ways of dealing with the fact that they are illiterate. Sue Townsend puts them all in extremely vulnerable situations and keeps the audience wondering (and dreading) how they will, or will not, cope as they struggle to 'grope for words'. The often hilarious dialogue is always tempered by the underlying tragedy of the character's situation.
