Nick Brown

Nick is originally from London, where he trained as an actor (Guildford School of Acting) and as a director (The University of London BA (Hons) in Drama & Theatre Arts; the University of Manchester MA in Theatre & Performance Studies). He is married to Clare, and is father to Katie, eight, and Cooper, six.

In London, Nick acted predominantly in musical theatre, performing in the West End at The Barbican Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Fortune Theatre Party Pieces and The Mermaid Theatre Merrily We Roll Along. He also played the lead in Pantomime at The Warwick Arts Centre The Tale of Good King Wenceslas, and toured the UK in theatre in education The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Winchlever. In New Zealand, Nick has most recently performed with Tina Cross in The World Goes Round, and prior to that was seen as Molokov in Auckland Music Theatre’s production of Chess. He also performed in Sweeney Todd at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch.

Nick is currently the Curriculum Manager for Senior Drama at Kristin school. Prior to this he lectured at the University of Canterbury for two years on a Visiting Teaching Fellowship. During this time he also researched and published writing on Bicultural Shakespeare Productions. Before focusing on teaching full time, Nick worked as a freelance theatre director, and his work took him from London, to Rome, to Bermuda, and also to New York, in two off-Broadway productions at the York Theatre. During this time Nick was the chair of the Directors’ Guild of Great Britain, an august body whose members include Nick Hytner, Sir Peter Hall, Sam Mendes, Peter Brook and Simon McBurney. In Aotearoa, Nick has won awards for productions of Ghetto by Joshua Sobol (AMI Showdown award for best direction) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (AMI Showdown award for outstanding production).

In his spare time Nick enjoys sport, especially football, playing for Greenhithe Football Club.
