Kenneth’s first stage experience was in the chorus of a musical The Firefly, in the lost, lamented His Majesty’s Theatre, in 1946. Since then he has acted and/or directed or compered in nine Auckland theatres (even the Civic!), two in Wellington, and seven in London. At the Toynbee Theatre, in particular, he enjoyed his “Renaissance” phase, acting and directing plays by Marlowe, Webster, Fletcher Ford and – what’s his name? – Shakespeare. His association with the Stables dates from 1992 playing in “Cowards” Present Laughter, and he has since then acted in several plays and also directed several, (a particular favourite of his was his production of I am a Camera based on Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin stories), including two rehearsed and acted play readings, and two evening “entertainments”.
As for “Pygmalion”; he has played Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Colonel Pickering, and, yes, even Professor Higgins, in an amateur production in London, and again Colonel Pickering in two productions of My Fair Lady, so “Pygmalion” does occupy a rather special place in his heart. |
